Bieber in Paris

I'm writing a column! Words my Grade 8 English teacher never could've imagined I'd utter. But I've always sort of been full of surprises...

To start, I'm going to tell a story from this summer.

Towards the end of June, I flew to Paris to do a shoot with Justin Bieber. When I was there, I also ended up dressing Justin for a visit with President Macron.

Here’s how it happened. I landed in Paris and got a text that Justin was going to meet the President. I had packed looks for him, but I hadn’t packed a suit. He never wears a suit. So I called my friend Peter at Celine and asked them to send a few over. I wanted Celine because it’s French, and I needed it to fit him well. And I had like, 20 minutes.

So I got the suits, hung two of them up in his closet, and left. And then, a few hours later, I saw this photo:

And I thought “Damn. That’s hot.” No really, that’s what I thought. That’s hot, he looks hot. And I’m happy because I did my job. There’s only one person I have to serve in my job - my client. And looking at that photo of Justin, I could tell that I had done my job.

So that image went viral for 24 hours, and my work on it took 20 minutes. How? Because I’ve spent 20 years getting good enough to do my job in 20 minutes.

And I think… that’s what this newsletter is going to be about.

How I got really good at something. Built a career, built a life. Built a platform, then used that platform for the things I care about.

I’ll invite other inspiring people to join us, and ask them how they did the same. But we’ll also talk about other things, like fashion and books and activism and raising a kid. All the other life-stuff.

I think we’re going to have fun. Because now I'm in one of the craziest weeks of my life. So join me next week, because I'll definitely be talking about the Met Ball.

X

How To Break Into Styling

A lot of people ask me how to break into styling. My answer, dear reader, is always the same. If you really want to work in fashion, then you should get a job as an assistant.
