F#$@ Resolutions

Happy New Year, dear reader.

It’s funny. I was feeling really blah when I started writing this week’s Bulletin.

It’s not that I felt overly stressed out. Normally, I would be. January 2nd is typically the start of awards season with the Palm Springs Film Festival. This year especially, I have so many clients in award-nominated films, which is what we stylists tend to live for. The chaos, the busy-ness…. award season can often feel like a playoff run to the Championship game.

But alas, awards season has been delayed. Not canceled, hopefully just postponed a few months.

So I’m starting the year a bit slower than usual. I’m sure I’m not the only one..

I think I was stressed because I hadn’t gotten my resolutions done. I spent Christmas with my family which was amazing - but of course we were delayed coming back, which then ate up the time I would usually spend planning my resolutions. And even more than that, I think I just… was at a loss.

Sure I want to cook more, and exercise “every single day” and wake up early and walk my dogs - but I say those things every year.

So what makes this year different? How do we make resolutions for another year in a pandemic?

I was thinking about this as I scrolled through Instagram. There, I saw that my Instagram friend Daphne (@doingwell) had posted a quote from an interview with Martin Margiela.

What are you working on? Continuing

Future plans? Continuity

What inspires you? Continuance

Advice? Continue!

If there’s one phrase I want to use for myself in 2022, it’s to continue.

I’m on a path. I know who I am, and I know what I love. By all means, there’s some tweaking that needs to be done. But there is something to be said about just continuing on the path you’re on.

We hear so much about new year, new starts.

But really, it’s just a work in progress. It’s a 365 days a year, 24/7 continuation of what I’ve been doing. It’s about getting better, and trying to be excellent, and going from there.

In a few months, I’ll check back in again. And I’ll look at what I wanted to do in January, and I’ll maybe update my plans or add some new ones. Because it’s never too late to make new resolutions, too.

And it’s never too late to continue.

x Karla

How To Break Into Styling

A lot of people ask me how to break into styling. My answer, dear reader, is always the same. If you really want to work in fashion, then you should get a job as an assistant.

This might be one of the healthiest resolutions/words for the New Year that I’ve ever heard. Continue.
